In 2018 Jay-Z stood on a track with his wife and rapped, “I said no to the Super Bowl.” Eight years later he’s saying yes to himself.

Here’s where we are. Super Bowl LXI is Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium. Since 2019, Roc Nation has been the NFL’s live-music partner, and Jay picks the halftime act. That’s the job. Every year since 2021 the headliner was announced in September. Kendrick got announced Sept. 8. Bad Bunny got announced Sept. 28. This year September came and went, and nobody stepped up to the mic.

Back on Sept. 18, the Daily Mail got a source “close to Jay-Z and the NFL” to say what everybody was already thinking. Organizers were “having a hard time locking anyone down.” The same source said a multi-artist show was “very high” odds, and then dropped the line that turned out to be a spoiler: “Jay-Z might do it himself and bring some friends.”

Well. On Oct. 20, Dave Brooks at Puck reported, citing multiple sources, that Jay-Z picked Jay-Z. Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were reportedly considered. The NFL and Roc Nation didn’t respond to Puck. Puck’s own Matt Belloni summed it up better than I could: “Jay-Z just Dick Cheney’d himself for the Super Bowl.”

For the young readers, Dick Cheney ran the search for George W. Bush’s running mate in 2000, looked around the room and picked himself. That’s where we are with the biggest stage in music.

The job Jay is getting paid for

Let’s be clear about what Roc Nation’s role is. They’re supposed to be the plug. The guy with the phone book. The man who can call any artist on earth and get them to Inglewood. Puck reports the NFL deal is worth around $5 million a year.

So you’re paid millions as the NFL’s music partner, you can’t lock down an act, and the act ends up being you? In my opinion that’s the most expensive “I’ll just do it myself” in the history of the NFL. Every intern who ever got told to find a DJ for the office party and then plugged in his own Bluetooth speaker just felt seen.

And give Jay credit for the sales pitch. He’ll call it a catalog show, an anniversary celebration, a victory lap for Reasonable Doubt 30 and Blueprint 25, with his own stadium dates at SoFi this very weekend. Convenient. Puck’s own reporting notes the man hasn’t had a major hit since 2013. The curator of the halftime show looked at every artist on the planet and decided the best option was a guy whose last big record came out when people were still doing the Harlem Shake.

The results under Roc Nation have been real: Rihanna, Kendrick, Bad Bunny. Nobody’s taking that away. But the whole point of having Jay in that chair is supposed to be pull. When the pull runs out, you find out what the chair was really for.

Why this year

Now ask why the phone stopped ringing back. The Daily Mail’s source laid it out. Political backlash is the first reason. Trump went after Bad Bunny’s halftime show, and the right had already been coming at Kendrick’s. If you’re a pop star with your own tour and your own fanbase, why walk into that crossfire on purpose?

Then there’s the money, or the lack of it. Halftime performers basically don’t get paid. You’re doing the biggest show of your life for the exposure, and the exposure now comes with a side of presidential posts about you. Bad trade.

And then there’s Colin Kaepernick. TIME reported that Kaep’s new book, “The Perilous Fight,” details tensions with Jay-Z. Remember, Roc Nation took this NFL deal back in 2019 while Kaep was still unsigned, and Jay said, “I think we have moved past kneeling.” Puck reports Jay was taking shots at Kaepernick from the stage at the Roots Picnic in May. So the year Kaep puts his side of the story in a hardcover, the man he’s writing about is booking himself on the NFL’s biggest stage. If you wanted a better plot, you’d have to write it yourself.

Add LA, add his anniversary tour, add SoFi, and the timing writes itself. In my opinion, whether this was a scramble or a plan, it lands in the same place. The guy whose job is to find the star found a mirror.

Who needs who

For years the story was that Jay-Z holds the keys to the culture and everybody has to kiss the ring to get on that stage. This year the ring needed somebody to kiss it, and the room went quiet. The Mail’s source said it plain. They were having “a hard time locking anyone down.”

Meanwhile Drake has nothing to prove to the NFL. He doesn’t need a Roc Nation phone call to fill a stadium. He doesn’t need a 12-minute window in February to remind anybody who he is. The man’s numbers do that every week.

There was even talk on X putting Drake’s name in the halftime conversation, right next to Kanye and Wayne. Imagine the NFL needing Drake more than Drake needs the NFL. Some of y’all don’t have to imagine it.

Cam’ron called the whole struggle story “cap” back in September. Charlamagne said it could be a smear campaign. Then a month later Puck reported the exact ending the Daily Mail’s source predicted. “Might do it himself.” So who was capping?

Final word

Jay-Z built a reputation as the smartest businessman in rap. Maybe this is smart business. Maybe booking yourself on the Super Bowl during your own anniversary tour, in the same city where you’ve nearly sold out the stadium, is the move of a genius.

Or maybe the plug finally went dead, and the only number left in the phone was his own.
